From ELT Wiki
Welcome to the ELT wiki
What is the use of jargon in any profession or (in this case) in the world of English language teaching?
And if we do know why we use jargon, does everyone agree on what the different jargon terms actually mean?
That's where you - all of us - come in. We can check the terms in this wiki and edit them so that they mean what we want them to mean - and then see if everyone else agree.
So the ELT wiki is for teachers and trainees, and methodologists, and me and you - and everyone.
We've started with a fairly minimal glossary. The rest is up to you.
Enjoy!

Scope of this project
I've just found this wiki via your plug in the April ELT Gazette (I get the free, month-old e-dition). I am curious about the scope of this wiki -- is it to include everything legitimately within the field of second language acquisition? Or, on the other hand, are proprietary ELT names acceptable, such as exams and indeed major employers and publishers? They would be handy for anyone starting a career.
Did you realise that the three links at the bottom of the page are empty (Privacy policy, About, and Disclaimer)? That could give the Pearson Longman lawyers some pause for thought. And the Project:Copyrights page does not exist yet. Under what licence are contributors submitting their work? Presumably not Creative Commons or the Wikipedia standard of GNU Free Documentation License? Does this mean that the work gathered here may be published in book or other format by Pearson Longman? What credit would they then give to the wiki editors? Perhaps there is a page on this wiki that explains all these issues, but I haven't found it yet. I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops. Formatting and other issues
I have a few questions about formatting conventions and such like.
- In many wikis the word or concept being defined is entered in bold and it is usually the first word of the article. I see that this sometimes happens here. Should this convention be followed?
- Many wikis make use of categories. I see none here although an alphabetical index seems to be sometimes used. Are we going to use categories?
- I see that many internal wiki links are in block capitals. This looks like a very bad idea to me as it will make linking quite tedious. Instead of simply putting square brackets around a term a user will have to re-write the term in block capitals each time they want to make a link.
- The questions raised by Roberta Wedge above should be addressed.
I think the idea of this Wiki is quite good, but it needs somebody who is able to and prepared to respond to questions of this nature if it is to prosper.--Bobbing up 11:56, 20 May 2008 (CEST)
Wiki copyright
Hi Jeremy, How exciting to discover another ELT wiki using MediaWiki! I have one at Wikigogy.org. I chose to put Wikigogy's content under the Creative Commons By-Attribution Share-Alike license so that its content could be re-mixed and re-shared legally under that same license anywhere by anyone, forever. I'd love to explain why I feel that is an important practical feature of the wiki's mission, if you are interested... Meanwhile, if you wish to put ELT Wiki under that same license (I recommend this -- and it would mean we could share content between our two wiki's), you can do it by adding this to your LocalSettings.php file:
## For attaching licensing metadata to pages, and displaying an ## appropriate copyright notice / icon. GNU Free Documentation ## License and Creative Commons licenses are supported so far. $wgEnableCreativeCommonsRdf = true; $wgRightsPage = ""; # Set to the title of a wiki page that describes your license/copyright $wgRightsUrl = "http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/"; $wgRightsText = "Creative Commons Attribution-Share-Alike 3.0"; #$wgRightsIcon = "http://creativecommons.org/images/public/somerights20.png"; $wgRightsIcon = "http://i.creativecommons.org/l/by-sa/3.0/88x31.png"; # $wgRightsCode = "by-sa"; # Not yet used
More about LocalSettings.php copyright stuff here
Best to declare a wiki friendly ELT Wiki copyright policy -- one that allows re-mixing and re-sharing -- soon. Currently all ELT Wiki contributions fall under full all rights reserved copyright, the default under the Berne Convention. That messes with ELT Wiki's mission because ELT Wiki pages cannot even be legally edited here online under that full all rights reserved copyright -- each page edit by a new user is a copyright infringement of the page's previous contributors because permission to edit and re-publish has not been explicitly given. I'd go with Creative Commons By-Attribution Share-Alike license, myself, to fix that up. Hope this helps. Cheers! :-) Roger 00:17, 14 October 2008 (CEST)
Logo
Why does this wiki use the Pearson Longman logo? --Roger 00:19, 14 October 2008 (CEST)
Domain name
Why not register the domain names for this wiki before someone else grabs these: .COM and .ORG for wikiELT and ELTwiki are available now. Would be a shame to loose them. --Roger 00:25, 14 October 2008 (CEST)
